Doris Roberts was born on 4th November 1925 in St. Louis, Missouri. Her maiden name was Doris May Green, and her family was Russian-Jewish immigrants. 

Her father had left before Doris was even born. So she was raised single-handedly in The Bronx, New York, by her mother and maternal grandparents. Her mother, Ann, later married Chester H. Roberts, Doris’s stepfather. 

Doris and her stepfather had a particularly close relationship, and so she eventually took Chester Roberts’s surname as her own. Doris’s stepfather and mother owned and operated a stenographic service – named the Z.L. Rosenfield Agency – that catered to actors and playwrights. 

Roberts knew from an early age that she wanted to pursue acting. She was surrounded by actors and playwrights, thanks to her parents. Doris eventually fell in love with the idea of working in the industry.
